The "Club Astoria" or more defined, the "German Australian Society in Morwell", Victoria was established in October 1957 at the Melodie Inn Cafe Church. Why a German Club? a question often asked. Our first members came to a far away land with different customs as well as a different language. It was a significant challenge for lot of the German community and there was a need for a place for people with a common interest to get together. The Continental Reading Circle helped us to get to know more of our own people and created a desire for a place for people to meet, resulting in the founding of the Club.
The present Building that we are in was available for tender from the SEC Yallourn. It was a staff mess hall at the western camp. We applied and were the successful tenderer for the sum of $801.00. The Club building was placed on its present location in1968, still to this date accommodating up to 110 people for internal and external functions. Club Astoria / The Morwell German Club continues to run the following activity throughout the year: German Language Program with local junior and secondary schools participating and competing. These events provide an atmosphere for students to learn about the German language and cultures
